Tips from a Stylist

Love Fashion Hacks? Me too! Here are some fashion tips from your personal stylist.

1. Fashion Tape or double sided tape is in every stylists travel bag. Double sided tape can help close up the gap between buttons on a blouse, hold a bow in place, keep your bust from poppin’ out, keep your bra from showing and so much more.

2. This one is a little obvious, but - Safety pins. Need to keep a seam together? Make a garment a little more fitted? Show less cleavage? Safety pins are a life saver sometimes so I always have at least one with me. If you have delicate fabric though, stick with double sided tape as safety pin holes can damage fragile fabric. Safety pins are a necessary tool when putting a drawstring (or elastic) back into a waistband that has come out.

3. Get a seamstress/tailor. Most off-the-rack fashion really needs to be tailored in some way in order to fit properly. Celebrities always look flawless in what they wear because they use a tailor or a seamstress. Whether it’s a hemline or a bustline, any special “fit” issues can be helped by a good tailor or seamstress. When that button pops off or when your zipper gets stuck in the fabric, you can call on your seamstress to rescue your garment and keep it in your closet rotation.

4. Steam-a-seam! Don’t know how to sew and don’t have a seamstress yet? Steam a seam is an iron-on product found at retailers like JoAnn’s Fabrics and Amazon that can be used to hem a garment, fix a tear and more. No sewing skills required. Takes less than 10 minutes to use.

5. Root touch up spray! Between salon appointments and those grays are coming through? Root touch up spray is the answer for women with darker hair. Gray hair pops off of browns and black hair more than it does off of blonde and red hair. If you want a quick fix that washes out with the next shampoo then get a can for about $10.

6. Good foundation garments! A good outfit can be great with the right foundation. Make sure you are wearing the right bra size, as your size can change with weight fluctuations. Shapewear is highly recommended underneath knits and body con garments. It gives you a smoother appearance, and not all shapewear makes you feeling like poppin fresh dough when you take it off. These aren’t the girdles our mothers wore. Shapewear has come a long way.
